Sans titre (Sacré Cceur)
This work, probably executed in 1948 upon his arrival in Paris, is for Zao Wou-Ki some sort of manifesto : the choice of oil paint, the Western themeof the church, the stylization of the trees, the fully saturated wide coloured areas.

Zao Wou-Ki’s recent paintings go on questioning the representation of space. The aplats and colour gradations of the background enhance the relief of the big black stripe in the foreground. The treat ment of space but also the plastic treatment of the blacks evidencethe impact of the technique and dilution of Indian ink.
